Blogs? What Is Blogging?

by Gary Harvey

The Internet plays a huge role in the lives of people on the entire planet. It is the fastest means to communicate with friends on the other side of the world and the richest source of information when you have to research for something.

One of the latest trends is blogging. And the blog got to be a contender for the crown when you’re looking for the most successful way to expressing yourself on the Internet.

What does blogging actually mean?

It is the personal need to express your feelings or thoughts, to share opinions, and to spread news or simply have fun that drives the passion for blogging. A blog is just a small individual web page. Like an online diary, you can write regular updates or add links to share your favorite sites. You can stick your photos up there or videos and even quite big documents that you want to share.

What attracts many people to the blogging phenomenon is the great opportunity of making themselves heard. If you want to reach a particular audience, odds are that you can do it via a blog. No wonder they’re popular.

Blogs dont have to be complex web pages. They can be quite simple. It all depends on what the creator wants. A few jottings for family and friends - or a massive enterprise that seeks to influence public opinion. It’s your choice.

Often blogs attract more eyeballs than large and well-designed websites. How come?

First of all, blogs are current — they provide fresh and rich informational content, and links to other sites or blogs on the topic. Equally important is focus — blogs zero in on a single issue that is of interest to their regular blog readers.

It has become common knowledge by now that blogs often receive more traffic than other web pages. Why? The answer o the blog traffic question lies with the very essence of a search engine structure: what a search engine likes most is fresh and high quality content. This is the main reason for the preeminence that blogs and the blogging phenomenon have managed to achieve ahead of normal web pages.

As the concept and the technologies of blogging have matured, the idea of an online diary is accompanied now by many commercial blogs. Yes, Virginia, you can make money blogging. In fact, I know of one young man who has bought a house with the money he has made from his blogs. More on that later…

Let’s say you like gardening, and you’ve also started your own home based business of growing plants. A blog on flowers and plants where you share your ideas and experience (and yes, throw in some photos for sure) would illustrate the commercial possibilities of a blog. How? Because you could also write about gardening books or e-books along with telling people where they can buy their gardening supplies. In other words, you not only talk about the joys and challenges of gardening… you also use your blog as a great promotional tool to sell gardening stuff.

So blogging is not only a neat and easy way to share your ideas with the world, it is also a powerful method for online marketing. Because of how easy blogs are to run, Internet profits are now open to people all over the world.
